So what is the NEO GEO AES?

The NEO GEO platform started in arcades as the MVS, it was a multi-game system most commonly in 4 or 6 game configurations.
With a range of games and specialising in the wildly popular fighting game genre the NEO GEO became hugely popular in arcades across Japan and the world.
Not long after its aracde release SNK announced a home version of the NEO GEO called the AES.
It played the same games as the arcade, not ports or conversions but the exact same game.
Although the cartridges were a different size and configuration as the arcade cartridges the game code was the same.
With the built-in memory card reader it was possible to buy a memory card and save your progress in the arcade or at home and continue later at either location.

2026 and the NEO GEO AES is back!

Announced today (16th April 2026) by the official NEO GEO X account a new hardware-faithful reimplementation of the original Japanese machine will be available from 12th November 2026.

Unlike many remakes of retro consoles gameplay on the NEOGEO AES+ is not achieved through emulation or FPGA.
Instead the console is powered by its legacy ASIC chips, re-engineered by modern standards to accurately replicate the original machine’s hardware and software.
The system will natively play game software from both new and old game cartridges.
Modern and classic connectivity will be available including HDMI and options to connect to a CRT.
